September is National Yoga Month, a month dedicated to educating people about the health benefits of yoga. At St. Cloud State University, Campus Recreation and the Wellness Committee have planned a few events in honor of the month.

Sunday, September 7th was “Free Yoga in the Park.” Hosted at Barden Park on campus, this event led participants through 50 different sun salutations. (A sun salutation being different poses performed in a graceful flow and linked by a breath.) The event was a great way to learn about this ever growing “lifestyle” and enjoy the beauty of the outdoors.

The next event is “Chair Yoga” and will be held on Wednesday, September 17th in Atwood Memorial Center. Chair yoga is a way to stretch your body using a chair for support and balance. This type of yoga might be right for you if you are wary to do yoga because you’re afraid your flexibility will restrict you.

The third event is “Yoga for Balance” and will be a series of classes held every Wednesday starting on September 17th. This class meets you at your abilities offering expanded body awareness, flexibility, breathing, balance, posture and unity. You can challenge yourself as advanced poses will be taught as an option or come to relax with more beginning postures.

At SCSU Campus Rec, we have a “Something for Everyone” mentality and we believe these events stick to it. For beginners to advanced yogis, we hope that participants find these events educational and beneficial.
